So I ended up watching A Face in the Crowd last night. I had always wanted to see Seven Samurai, but I didn't realize it was over three hours long. I'd recommend A Face in the Crowd, though, if you can find it. As I said yesterday, I got the VHS from the library. The movie was the debut of Andy Griffith, but he wasn't playing Andy of Mayberry, that's for sure. I had read about the film on popmatters.com in an article I mentioned a little while back. They do a really good job with their synopsis, so I'd suggest checking it out. I thought it was great that, even in the 1950's, there were some that realized the true power (both good and bad) of television.
Griffith plays a southern good ol' boy that somehow goes from prison to radio to television superstar. But, in reality, he's a con artist using everyone for his own personal gain. Here's it's wikipedia entry:

Interesting to note that it's directed by Elia Kazan, who (I assume) is mentioned on the fantastic new Spoon album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga in the song Rhthm & Soul, which is quickly becoming my favorite song on the album (besides You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb and The Underdog and Finer Feelings of course).
I had to return the stuff back to the library today, and I decided to wear my Durkl Ultimate Warrior shirt I picked up at Krudmart in Buffalo (there's a pic of it in the post about the Fujiya and Miyagi and Chromeo shows). So the first fifty-something librarian stops me so the second fifty-something librarian can admire my shirt. Why, you ask? It seems that she's a big fan of bats. One person that (maybe) reads this will find that quite amusing. So I don't know what I'm doing hanging out at shows and bars and gyms and stuff trying to meet girls when I have two hot librarians at my disposal. I don't think there's anything else that can be said, so I'll end it here.

You Got Yr. Spoon Cd (and Ep) (and 7")
So I skipped out of work early today and made the jaunt to the semi-local independent record store near a favorite concert spot of mine (you may have heard of them) and grabbed the new Spoon CD. And, if you read the title of this post, you can see that I was lucky enough to receive both the limited EP attached to the CD and the 7" that is apparently pretty darn limited in it's own right. I haven't gotten around to listening to the 7" yet, but I threw both the album and the EP on the old iPod for my fun run.
Before the run could start, however, I was accosted by a pretty cute girl banging on my window. It scared me pretty good (the banging on the window, not the fact that there was actually a girl so interested in me that she was trying to break my window with her fists just to get to me). But, she thought I was someone else. I guess she was waiting on a friend that drove the same car as mine. She must've been waiting fairly long, since it took me almost an hour to do all six miles, and she was still in her car talking to the guy in the parking lot when I was done. I also didn't see her out on the path the entire time. The dude seemed like a real dweeb too. I guess there's no accounting for taste sometimes.
So I'll have to listen to the album/EP a few more times before I really can give an opinion. As of now, it reminds me more of Girls Can Tell and Kill the Moonlight than Gimme Fiction, and the latter is my favorite Spoon album. However, the listen was exceptional enough to outrun some guy that started his fun run at the same time as me. He looked like he could have run in some races, too, so I was fairly proud of myself. I mentioned the Justice Cross album recently, but when I was running through today's releases yesterday, I forgot to mention it. I didn't mention Against Me! either, but I was never really a fan of theirs. I have one 7" I ordered from No Idea Records about five years ago, but that's it. I wasn't too impressed.
One thing I am impressed with is the video for Spoon's The Underdog. Here it is:

Youngstown Rocks the Hardest
Youngstown was pretty fun. No pics though. I brought the camera but the mood never really struck me.
Saturday I went to Cedar's for a friend's 25th birthday celebration. I hadn't been there in at least five years and I was reminded why fairly quickly. I hate paying a cover (even if it's only $5) for a band I have no interest in whatsoever. Besides that, before they played (I don't remember their name) some guy got on the mic and was bragging about how they'd been on MTV and Jimmy Kimmel and a bunch of nonsense that no one wanted to hear. Youngstown had Nyabinghi and I liked that place a whole hell of a lot more. Don't get me wrong, Cedar's has the best crowd of any bar in Youngstown (probably), but I really dislike having to spend $5 to get in. I also didn't see my friend until it was almost time to leave, so that kinda sucked too.
I wanted to catch the UFC Pay-Per-View Saturday since it looked really good on paper. I got the hook-up today, though, so I'm gonna give that a watch shortly. Maybe I'll write some stuff about it tomorrow. I said I'd give some thoughts on the ROH PPV a little while back, so I'll do that in due time. I might have to watch it again, though, since it's been a while.
In other news, tomorrow looks like the biggest CD release date in some time. Here's what I'm seeing:
Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell
I said some stuff about this in an earlier post. It's not listed in the Best Buy or Circuit City ad this week, though. So that can't be good.
Interpol - Our Love to Admire
I completely ignored these guys until early 05, when I fell pretty hard. I can't listen to Antics without flashing back to Saturday nights at Thursdays Bar in Akron. Good Times.
Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist
I was never the biggest fan, but I gave it a listen anyway. I only heard it once, but it's pretty blah. It'll probably sell more than the other ones I mentioned, but whatever.
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
This is the big one (Elizabeth). I plan on grabbing this one tomorrow at the semi-local independent record store and I hope they'll still have a limited edition 7" for me. I intentionally avoided any previews of this, aside from The Underdog. I mentioned seeing the video on MySpace, and I saw it on MTV2's Subterranean last night. I'm excited.

I Summon You Here (to) My Blog
While screwing around on the internet earlier today I saw this:
I haven't paid any attention to Dizzee Rascal since he had that song Fix Up, Look Sharp that sampled a well-known Billy Squier song that's been sampled by Big Daddy Kane and others that I can't think of right now. Here's the video for that one:
The first video is for the song Old Skool and I'd say that it describes the song and video quite well. I can listen to that It Takes Two sample forever. A little research, however, shows that the album version of the song is titled Pussy'ole (Old Skool) so maybe that version's a little more randy. Maybe I'll have to give his new album a listen. It's also become apparent that I should have paid more attention to this guy.
In other news, I gave a listen to New Maps of Hell, the new album from Bad Religion. It's really unfathomable that they've been so consistent for so many years. The three year wait since their last one (The Empire Strikes First) is the most time between albums since the five year gap between Into the Unknown and Suffer (1983-1988). So until now, they've released an album no more than two years apart since 1988. And I know a lot of people slag them because they think that everything sounds the same. F that. I hate to break it to anyone, but that's punk rock for ya. Most punk bands sound pretty similar from album to album. From the Ramones to the Descendents to Social D to the Queers and on and on and on. Anyway, Bad Religion's gonna be on the Warped Tour and the record's so good that it's almost convincing me to go to Warped. Almost.
And Spoon premiered their new video for the song The Underdog today on MySpace. I mentioned the song a few weeks back when I said that I was gonna hold off on the new Spoon until it's released. I still have that attitude, but it's tough. I REALLY wanna hear the album since Spoon is one of my favs. But, only five more days. I'd put their video on here, but I don't know how to link MySpace videos. When it shows up on youtube, it'll be here. I think that's it for now.

In other news, I read some pretty shitty news online earlier. Apparently Scott Steiner suffered an injury to his trachea. He will most likely be out for the planned matchup with Team 3-D at the next TNA Pay-Per-View. I was really looking forward to seeing two of the better tag teams of all time (The Steiner Brothers and The Dudley Boyz/Team 3-D) tear it up, but I guess it'll have to wait. Oh well, I guess sometimes
That tee's from Mishka's Summer 07 line. The back says Louder Than Fuck and I think that's a reference to a Soundgarden shirt from a while back. I also think I used to work with a guy that told a story about getting kicked out of Cedar Point for wearing said Soundgarden shirt, but I might have that confused with something else.
Also earlier today, I heard a tune from the forthcoming Spoon album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (I'm pretty sure I added the appropriate amount of Ga's). If I knew how to throw it on here, I would, but I don't. It's a real barnburner, though, and it's getting me super pumped for the album. The song's called The Underdog, so look out for it. I saw Spoon at a free show in Pittsburgh (a.k.a. Pissburgh) at Carnegie Mellon University a few short weeks ago, and they were as tight as ever. It seems as though they're only playing festivals through the summer, though. I'm kinda bummed about that since I wanted to hear the new material performed live. The recent show had a setlist full of classics. They probably played some new tuneage, but I haven't heard the album yet, so I wouldn't know. I'm gonna try and wait for the release date to hear it, too. I heard it's going to be packaged with an exclusive EP, ala Gimme Fiction (maybe my favorite album of 05), so it's more incentive to wait.
I couldn't wait to hear this one, though, and if you read yesterday's entry you'd already know:
Yes, the sophomore offering from by good (MySpace) buddies Chromeo is getting some heavy rotation on my end. And, yesterday I saw that they posted their tour dates for the Summer. Flosstradamus (another (MySpace) buddy of mine) gets the opening gig. It really, really stinks that they're not hitting Cleveland, BUT they are invading Buffalo on 07/13 and Chicago on 07/14. I wanna go to at least one of these, so who's in? Get at me if you're down. My next post will have more about the OTHER stuff going on in Chicago that weekend.
